SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Vanguard baseball completed its sweep of No. 16 Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, defeating the Cougars 8-2 in the opener and 14-13 in the nightcap. With the three-game shutdown, the Lions improve to 4-0 on the season.
Senior third baseman Greg Younger (Bakersfield, Calif.) paced The Pride in its first game of the day with three hits and an RBI. Three other Lions (Brandon Sandoval, Bret Collins and John Schwer) added two knocks apiece in the victory for VU.
Richard Perry (Fontana, Calif.) got the start and tossed seven frames, allowing both of the Cougars' runs early before collecting the first win of his senior campaign. He K'ed three and walked one in the performance.
In the nightcap, junior Scott Torrey (Simi Valley, Calif.) began on the mound, but it was freshman reliever Brady Moore (Van Nuys, Calif.) who garnered the dub for the Blue and Gold. The victory was Moore's first as a collegiate ball-player.
Vanguard trailed the Cougars 10-6 going into the final inning but came from behind to record eight runs in the top of the seventh to force CSUSM to take the plate in the bottom of the frame.
The Cougars rallied with three runs to bring the contest within one but freshman Roberto Johnson (San Marcos, Calif.) and the Lions' defense collected the final two outs of the game to secure the win for VU.
Cal State San Marcos committed six errors in the loss.
Junior designated hitter Bret Collins (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), the Lions' batting leader at .706 (12-for-17) on the early season, registered a 4-for-5, 4 RBI effort in the nightcap. He went 6-for-10 in the double-header with 6 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
Freshman outfielder Brandon Sandoval (Fallbrook, Calif.) tallied four knocks, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored on the day for the Lions.
