SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – No. 7 The Master's College swept Vanguard 9-4 and 5-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference baseball action on Saturday at Reese Field. Vanguard drops to 16-24 (9-18 GSAC) on the year with nine regular season GSAC slates remaining on the schedule.
Jordan Mould (Stockton, Calif.) put the Lions up 1-0 in the top of the first with a blast over the right field fence. The senior first-baseman has hit a team-leading three homeruns in 2013.
In the bottom of the inning, however, TMC responded with a run of its own to being the game to even. The Mustangs put two more on the board in the third to take a 3-1 lead and though VU managed to garner three additional runs in the contest, by the ninth, The Master's had pulled away to stretch the margin to 9-4.
Mould, junior Ian Sakry (Long Beach, Calif.) and senior Bryce Arroyo (Brea, Calif.) led the Blue and Gold with two hits apiece in the loss. The trio accounted for six of Vanguard's nine hits in the opener.
Senior Travis Tomsen took the loss for the Lions and moves to 2-6 on the season. He struck out six Mustangs in 3.2 innings of work.
In the second frame of the second game, The Master's scored a run off of a lead-off triple from Spencer Downs and an RBI double from Ryan Shackelford.
Vanguard tied the game in the bottom of the fifth after singles from junior Francisco Torres (Cathedral City, Calif.) and senior Ellis Whitman (Seattle, Wash.), but TMC managed three additional runs in the same frame to take a 4-1 lead.
Each team posted another respective run in the sixth to bring the final tally to 5-2 in favor of the Mustangs.
Senior Scott Simmons (Murrieta, Calif.)(5-6) suffered the defeat on the mound. He threw 4.2 innings, allowed four runs and gave up five hits.
San Diego Christian is next for the Pride. The Lions will host the Hawks in a single game at 3:00pm on April 12th and will begin a doubleheader starting at noon on the 13th.
