IRVINE, Calif. – Vanguard baseball split its final doubleheader of the season to finish the year at 22-27 overall and 15-21 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. No. 14 Concordia defeated VU 3-2 in game one, but the Lions persevered to win the nightcap, 4-1.

Seniors Bryce Arroyo (Brea, Calif.), Jordan Mould (Stockton, Calif.) and Matt Avery (Los Alamitos, Calif.) tallied three hits apiece in the twinbill. Arroyo was the lone Lion to record multiple knocks in the opener, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Avery and Mould led the charge in game two, their final collegiate contest, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.

Mould began the DH on the right foot, as he crushed a solo homerun down the right field line to account for the Pride's first run of the day.

Fourth-year pitcher, Scott Simmons (Murrieta, Calif.) also had success in the his last start as a Lion, garnering the big win on the mound in game two to finish the season at 8-6. He tossed six innings, walked one, allowed one run and struck out four Eagles' batters. Simmons' classmate Kevin Ponzo (San Dimas, Calif.) closed the game strong to pick up his 11th save of the year.

Senior Travis Tomsen (Riverside, Calif.) took the loss in the opener, despite a solid 7.2 inning performance, in which he surrendered three runs on just three hits.

Vanguard batters outhit CUI 5-3 in game one, but committed two fielding mishaps in the 3-2 loss.

Concordia was first to score in the opener, but the Blue and Gold tied the slate at 1-all in the third and tacked on three runs in the ensuing frame off of two hits and two walks to take a comfortable lead on the Eagles.

In the bottom half of the fourth, CUI managed three of its own knocks, but Simmons and the Lions were able to work their way out of the inning unscathed.

Simmons gave up just one more hit before Ponzo took over in the seventh, where VU got three quick outs to secure the victory.
