IRVINE, Calif. – Vanguard came up two runs short of a victory on Friday against Concordia, falling 6-5 in the ninth inning to the 14th-ranked Eagles.
Taylor McKnight (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Ian Sakry (Long Beach, Calif.) and John Schwer (Burbank, Calif.) led the Lions' offense with two hits apiece, going to 2-for-4, respectively, on the afternoon.
The Pride fell behind 2-0 early, but McKnight brought the game within a run in the fourth with a solo homerun to left.
CUI responded with a three-run fifth to stretch its edge to 5-1 , where the game remained until the eighth when VU posted two runs off of three walks and a double from junior Thomas Mobley (Anaheim, Calif.).
The Lions made it interesting in the ninth, tying the contest at 5-all following a three hit frame, but Concordia took advantage of a VU fielding mishap later in the inning to score the final run of the game and claim the 6-5 victory.
The Eagles improve to 32-26 overall and 21-13 in Golden State Athletic Conference baseball slates. Vanguard drops to 21-26 on the year and 14-20 in league play.
