COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard swept Saturday's baseball doubleheader against Golden State Athletic Conference foe San Diego Christian to boost its record to 18-25 on the season and 11-19 in league competitions. The Lions bested the Hawks 4-2 in the opener and posted a 2-1 (8 inning) win in the nightcap.
Seniors Travis Tomsen (Riverside, Calif.) and Scott Simmons (Murrieta, Calif.) picked up the victories on the mound for VU, each throwing eight innings and giving up six hits in their respective starts.
Tomsen's game one performance featured five strikeouts, while Simmons tossed a complete extra-inning game to close out the series. Junior Clayton Voechting (Temecula, Calif.) earned his first save of the year for VU in the opener.
In game one, Vanguard overcame a 2-1 deficit in the third by way of a Bryce Arroyo (Brea, Calif.) two-run homerun.
The fifth saw junior Thomas Mobley (Anaheim, Calif.) and Arroyo both double to stretch the Lions' advantage to two runs.
Arroyo went two-for-four and recorded all four of the Pride's RBIs. Senior Jordan Mould (Stockton, Calif.) was also two-for-four in the opener.
The nightcap saw the Hawks and the Lions tied at 1-all in the third. The game would remain deadlocked until the eighth, when Mobley led off with a single and advanced to second on an interference. SDCC intentionally walked Arroyo next and a throwing error by the San Diego Christian third-baseman during senior Ellis Whitman's (Seattle, Wash.) at-bat saw Mobley score to give VU the victory.
Senior Jason Ochart (Glendale, Calif.) stole two bases in the affair and picked up a pair of knocks for Vanguard in the game. Mobley and senior John Schwer (Long Beach, Calif.) went two-for-four and two-for-three, respectively, in the win.
The Lions have six GSAC games remaining. Vanguard will host Biola in its final home series, which will begin on April 19th at 3:00pm. The Blue and Gold's 2013 seniors will be recognized prior to the contest.
