SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Vanguard split its Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Westmont College on Thursday. The Lions' shortstop, Bryce Arroyo (Brea, Calif.), was 6-for-8 on the day with three runs scored and an RBI.
Senior Travis Tomsen (Riverside, Calif.) threw together a solid outing in the opener as the Lions defeated the Warriors 4-3 at Russ Carr Field.
Tomsen started the contest and went the distance to earn his second win of the season. He gave up five hits, walked four and struck out six Warriors in the effort.
Arroyo paced the Lions' offense in the early game, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored. Senior Jason Ochart (Glendale, Calif.) recorded a pair of knocks, while classmate Ellis Whitman (Seattle, Wash.) and junior Ian Sakry (Long Beach, Calif.) tallied VU's RBIs.
Vanguard took a 2-1 lead in the fourth and stretched its advantage to two in the top of the seventh, but Westmont responded to tie the game at 3-all in the bottom of the frame.
The Blue and Gold wasted no time in the eighth, stealing the lead back for good via a lead-off double from Arroyo and an RBI single from Whitman.
Senior Scott Simmons (Murrieta, Calif.) took the 3-2 loss in the nightcap. He allowed six hits and two earned runs in 4.1 innings.
The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the first but fell behind 2-1 in the third after four Warriors' hits and a VU error.
Westmont tacked on another run in the fifth and although Vanguard managed to post a score in the sixth, it was too little, too late as WC secured the nightcap victory.
With the split, VU moves to 16-21 overall and 9-15 in GSAC play.
Vanguard will pause for the weekend and resume play on Friday, April 5th at The Master's College.
