SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Vanguard's Kamakani Usui (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Clayton Voechting (Temecula, Calif.) held Westmont to a single run and their teammates garnered six for VU to propel the Lions past the Warriors in Wednesday's Golden State Athletic Conference showdown.
To open the day, Vanguard and Westmont finished their February 11th contest which was called in the 10th inning, tied at 9-9, due to darkness.
The Warriors, acting as the away team, were up to bat first. They quickly posted three runs in the frame via five hits to grab a 12-9 lead.
Vanguard could not respond in its half of the inning, going three-up, three-down to hand WC the win.
Senior Kevin Ponzo (San Dimas, Calif.) (1-2) took the loss for the Pride.
The full game, however, was a different story entirely, as the Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first and added runs in each of the second, third and fourth frames to stretch the margin to 6-0 heading into the fifth.
Westmont managed a run in the fifth but had general difficulty scoring in the competition. The Warriors recorded six hits and left nine stranded on base in the affair. They also committed four errors in the loss.
Vanguard registered seven hits, four of which belonged to senior Bryce Arroyo (Brea, Calif.) and junior John Collins (Fallbrook, Calif.) who went 2-for-5 and 2-for-3, respectively, in the victory.
Usui earned the win for the Pride, giving up six hits, striking out three and walking three in seven full frames of work. He moves to 3-4 in his senior campaign.
The Lions sit at 15-20 overall and are 8-14 in GSAC action.
On Thursday, Vanguard and Westmont are scheduled to conclude the league series with a doubleheader. Game one will begin at noon.
