COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard (12-17) was swept by Menlo College (15-13) in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Thomas Mobley (Anaheim, Calif.) led the Lions with four hits on the day.
The Oaks took game one 5-3 after falling behind 2-0 in the fourth inning. The Pride outhit MC 9-7 in the affair but committed three errors.
Senior Kevin Ponzo (San Dimas, Calif.) took the defeat on the mound, giving up a pair of runs in the ninth inning off of two hits and a Lions' throwing error.
Jordan Moak (Sulphur, La.), VU's sophomore starter, tossed five scoreless innings to open the game. He had the perfect game going until the sixth when MC posted two of runs off of three hits and a walk.
Senior Jason Ochart (Glendale, Calif.) equaled Mobley's 2-for-4 performance in the opener. Mobley also managed an RBI and a run scored.
The nightcap saw VU take another early 2-0 lead, but the Oaks opened the game up in the second and third innings, scoring six runs to claim a 6-2 advantage.
Vanguard posted its final run in the fourth, but it would not be enough as MC tacked on one more in the ninth to secure the 7-3 win.
Six of VU's eight hits belonged to Mobley, senior Nikko Tountas (Lincolnwood, Ill.) and senior Ellis Whitman (Seattle, Wash.). Each player tallied two knocks in the contest. Whitman was responsible for two of the Blue and Gold's three RBIs and N. Tountas registered the other.
Senior Scott Simmons (Murrieta, Calif.) was credited with the loss and moves to 5-3 on the season.
Vanguard has its final slate with the Oaks on Wednesday afternoon at 12:00pm.
