COSTA MESA, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos (19-2) completed its sweep of Vanguard (12-15) on Saturday afternoon with a pair of victories at the VU Baseball Field.
The opener saw the Cougars out-hit the Lions 12-to-4 en route to a 5-1 victory. Senior Travis Tomsen (Riverside, Calif.) (1-4) took the loss for the Blue and Gold.
Junior Thomas Mobley (Anaheim, Calif.) put VU on the board with an RBI single in the seventh following a triple from senior Jordan Mould (Stockton, Calif.).
The Pride's remaining knocks belonged to senior Jason Ochart (Glendale, Calif.) and junior John Schwer (Burbank, Calif.).
In the nightcap the Lions got two hits apiece from Mobley and senior Bryce Arroyo (Brea, Calif.) but were once again overpowered by the Cougars.
Vanguard's Schwer brought the contest to even at 1-all in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Arroyo home.
CSUSM pulled away in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead and eventually posted an additional four runs in the ninth to grab the 8-1 victory.
Third-year Richard Perry (Fontana, Calif.) (1-3) suffered the loss on the mound. He went 4.1 innings, allowed four runs and gave up eight hits.
On March 19th, the Pride will host Menlo College in a doubleheader. The first game will begin at noon.
