COSTA MESA, Calif. – Concordia, the NAIA's 11th-ranked team, defeated Vanguard 2-1 in 11 innings on Monday afternoon to move to 19-9 overall and 12-6 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. The Lions drop to 12-11 on the season and 6-11 in league slates with the loss. Junior Thomas Mobley (Anaheim, Calif.) led the Blue and Gold offense with two hits, two walks and a run scored on the day.
A controversial opening inning saw Vanguard on the board first after a Mobley single and some CUI air-mail which sent him to third. Senior Bryce Arroyo (Brea, Calif.) came to plate next and brought his junior teammate home with a sacrifice fly to left.
In the sixth, Concordia's Ty Holm led off with a single and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt. The Eagles' Dillon Bryant pushed him to third with a sacrifice bunt and a Cody Smith groundout gave CUI a run to tie the game at 1-all.
Vanguard had a chance to break the deadlock in the bottom of the seventh with one out and runners on second and third, but CUI got out of the inning with a strikeout and a fly out in foul territory.
CUI placed a pair of runners in scoring position in the next stanza, but could not, despite its best effort, bring the runs around.
Four scoreless innings would pass before the Eagles put a run on the scoreboard.
In the eleventh, a walk followed by a stolen base and an RBI knock to center would be the Pride's undoing.
Down 2-1 with the game on the line, Mobley led off with a single to shortstop, but a strikeout, a ground-out and a fly out would end the competition in favor of Concordia.
Senior Travis Tomsen (Riverside, Calif.) went eight innings, struck out four, walked one and gave up five hits.
Junior Clayton Voechting (Temecula, Calif.) took the loss for the Lions. It was his first defeat of the year.
Vanguard is at Cal State San Marcos on Friday for a non-conference doubleheader. The first game is slated for 11:00am.
