COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard split its doubleheader with 11th-ranked Concordia on Saturday. The Golden State Athletic Conference match-up saw the Eagles earn a win in the first game (10-4) and the Lions bounce back to post a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
Junior Thomas Mobley (Anaheim, Calif.) and senior Jason Ochart (Glendale, Calif.) both performed well for VU, going 4-for-6 and 3-for-7 on the day, respectively.
In the opener, Mobley and Ochart combined for five of the Lions' eight total knocks. Mobley notched three of them, while Ochart tabbed two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Senior Jordan Mould (Stockton, Calif.) recorded two of the Pride's four RBI's in the contest. The remaining RBI went to junior John Collins (Fallbrook, Calif.). Mould and Collins each went 1-for-4 for Vanguard.
CUI's lefty hurler, Cole Swanson picked up the win to move to 6-0 on the season for the Eagles, while senior Kamakani Usui (Honolulu, Hawaii) (1-3) took the loss for VU.
Usui posted four strikeouts in the defeat.
Vanguard stepped up to secure the split in game two, despite being out-hit 9-6 in the affair.
Senior Scott Simmons (Murrieta, Calif.) got the start and threw five innings for the Lions. He struck out two, walked one and gave up seven hits in the effort.
The Blue and Gold's senior closer Kevin Ponzo (San Dimas, Calif.) finished the job to garner his ninth save of the year.
VU led 4-0 after posting a run in the third and three in the fourth but allowed the Eagles back into the contest following a two-run fifth for CUI.
Concordia pulled within a run in the seventh but could not complete the comeback as Simmons and the Lions' defense got out of the inning to record the important GSAC victory.
Vanguard sits at 12-10 overall and 6-10 in league competitions.
