EL CAJON, Calif. – After being rained out on Friday afternoon, Golden State Athletic Conference baseball resumed on Saturday between Vanguard and San Diego Christian. The Lions secured an 8-5 victory in the first game but lost the second slate 6-5.
Vanguard is one game above .500 at 8-7. All seven of the Lions' losses have come against GSAC opponents.
GAME ONE
The Lions battled in the opener to earn a win after a back-and-forth contest with the Hawks. VU doubled the Hawks' hit total (14-7) in the victory.
Senior Ellis Whitman (Seattle, Wash.) registered a three hit (3-for-5) game, while teammates Adonis Tountas (Lincolnwood, Ill.), Jordan Mould (Stockton, Calif.) and John Schwer (Burbank, Calif.) tallied two hits apiece for the Pride.
The contest was tied at 1-all after the second but the Blue and Gold racked up five runs in the top of the fourth frame to go up 6-1. The Hawks would also score in the bottom of the inning but the Lions held SDC to a single run to emerge with a 6-2 advantage.
By the seventh, however, San Diego had brought the game within a run after the Hawks managed a pair of scores in the fifth and a run in the sixth.
Vanguard added insurance in the seventh courtesy of a walk by senior Matt Avery (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and an RBI double from Whitman.
The Lions' eighth and final run came in the eighth following a double by Tountas and an RBI single from senior Bryce Arroyo (Brea, Calif.).
Senior Travis Tomsen (Riverside, Calif.) garnered the win for VU and moves to 2-5 overall. Tomsen struck out five in the effort and gave up five hits. Kevin Ponzo (San Dimas, Calif.) snagged his fifth save of the year, throwing just over an inning and allowing no base-runners.
GAME TWO
Junior Thomas Mobley (Anaheim, Calif.) went three-for-three in the nightcap, but the Lions did not fare as well, falling 6-5 to the Hawks.
Senior Kamakani Usui (Honolulu, Hawaii) got the start and went five innings. He gave up 10 hits and K'ed five.
Sophomore Jordan Moak (Sulphur, Calif.) (1-1) relieved Usui in the fifth when SDCC broke a 3-all tie to take a one-run lead.
In the sixth, VU stole the lead back with two runs of its own, but once again the Hawks overcame the deficit to take the game by the final of 6-5.
Vanguard heads back to San Diego Christian on Monday to make-up Friday's rained out contest. The game is scheduled for 2:00pm.
