Costa Mesa, CA---The Vanguard Lions took advantage of a one-game break from GSAC action to post an 8-1 non-conference victory over visiting La Sierra University on Tuesday afternoon. Bryce Arroyo's three RBI helped the Pride earn the program's third straight victory, while Brandon Young chipped in with a pair of RBI. The Lions' staff, paced by starter Spencer Moran, held the Golden Eagles to just one run through the nine-inning contest, limiting the visitors to just six hits in the game.
After neither team scored in the first frame, VUSC hit the board in the bottom of the second when Jordan Mould tripled to plate Michael Castello. The Lions added two more in the third and consecutive runs in the fourth and fifth frames to make it 5-0 in favor of the Blue and Gold. The hosts scored twice in the seventh and added their final run in the eighth, putting the game all but out of reach for the visitors from Riverside. LSU was able to push one run across in the final inning to make it 8-1, but the home squad quickly squelched any chance of a comeback.
Five pitchers saw action for the hosts, and Moran got the win, going three innings without allowing a run and striking out three. Kenneth Curiel was tagged with the loss for La Sierra, who fell to 3-26-1 this season.
VU improved to 17 with the win, the program's third consecutive victory. Vanguard has posted a 12-6 record at home, and has feasted on non-GSAC opponents, going 10-2 against non-conference opponents. The Lions return to GSAC action on Friday, heading to Santa Clarita to battle with the 24th-ranked The Master's Mustangs. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
