Santa Clarita, Calif. - A forecast of rain did not prevent the Vanguard Lions from traveling to Santa Clarita for a GSAC baseball double header today. However, the rain did put a damper on completing the twinbill as the teams played through rain off and on to finish game one. The Master's College posted a 3-2 victory over the Lions before game two was postponed until Monday.
Beginning the day 6-0 in GSAC after a fistful of come-from-behind victories, the Lions were not worried when Tyler Bersano held them scoreless for the first eight innings. The Mustangs had reached Vanguard starting pitcher Lance Abbott for one earned run on six hits in six innings. Abbott struck out five Mustangs before handing the job over to Adrian Mendoza. Mendoza relinquished the final two Mustang runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 3-0 TMC lead.
Brandon Godfrey relieved Mendoza and retired the final pair of Mustangs to keep the deficit at three runs.
Trailing 3-0 as they came to bat for the final time, the Lions scored two runs off Trent Abbott in the top of the ninth. Down to their last two outs, senior Erick Kryzsiak walked to give the Lions some life. Tyson Leighton singled before pinch-hitter Brett Halstead whacked a two-run double, cutting the lead to 3-2. TMC brought in Zack Anderson to relieve Abbott on the hill. Anderson retired the next two Lions to snuff the rally and hand the Lions their first GSAC loss of the season.
Vanguard pitching gave up 12 hits and three earned runs on the day, and Lance Abbott took the loss for the Lions. Tyson Leighton smacked three of VU's nine hits on the day, but it was not enough as the Lions finally ran into a deficit they could not overturn.
The Master's (10-7, 4-3) registered its first win of the year against Vanguard, now 15-2 overall and 6-1 in GSAC, but game two was postponed until Monday. Go Lions!
