Spenser Nunes joins the Vanguard University Men’s Basketball coaching staff for the 2026 season, bringing more than a decade of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels.
Nunes most recently served as the interim Head Men’s basketball coach at Pasadena City College during the 2025-26 season after spending the previous three seasons as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Lancers.
During his three seasons as an assistant at PCC, Nunes helped the Lancers compile a 59-32 overall record (.648) and make three consecutive appearances in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. PCC won a postseason game in each of those seasons and reached the regional final in 2023 for the program’s best regular and postseason finish in three decades.
As interim Head Coach in 2025-26, Nunes oversaw all aspects of the program, including recruiting, player development, academics, fundraising and day-to-day operations. The Lancers produced two All-South Coast Conference selections, while four of the team’s five sophomores earned scholarships to four-year universities.
Throughout his collegiate coaching career, Nunes has developed extensive recruiting experience at both the two-year and four-year levels. His recruiting efforts have spanned Southern California and throughout the United States, as well as internationally, including prospects from Australia, Canada, China and Europe. He has also helped numerous student-athletes advance to four-year programs and has coached multiple All-Conference and All-State selections.
Prior to PCC, Nunes served as the Head Boys basketball coach at Paloma Valley High School in Menifee during the 2021-22 season.
His previous collegiate experience includes serving as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Dickinson State University in North Dakota during the 2014-15 season where they recorded four victories over nationally ranked top-10 NAIA opponents along with a victory over an NCAA Division II opponent. From 2012-2014, Nunes served as Associate Head Coach at Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College in Oklahoma. During his two seasons at Hillsdale, the Saints reached back-to-back NCCAA Southwest Regional Finals
Nunes began his coaching career as the Head Boys basketball coach at Waverly-South Shore High School in South Dakota from 2010-12, where he guided the program in 2011-12 to a 14-7 record, its best season in 15 years.
Before entering coaching, Nunes was a two-year starter and team captain at Calvary Chapel High School in Downey, California. He earned all-league honors, scored more than 500 career points and was a member of a CIF finalist team.
Nunes earned his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in History from South Dakota State University and a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from Arkansas State University.
