Biography
The athlete: Zachary begins his third season of track and field at Vanguard…will change focus from middle distance to sprints and hurdles as a junior…ran the 400m leg in the 2004 and 2005 All-American Distance Medley Relay at the NAIA Indoor Nationals…has personal bests of 51.78 in the 400m, 57.7 in the 400m hurdles, and 2:01 in the 800m…ran cross country as a freshman at VUSC…three-sport high school athlete…10-time high school letterman…graduated from Costa Mesa High School in 2003…two-time CMHS Track MVP…four-time All-League runner…two-time League Champion in the 300m Intermediate Hurdles…also a standout high school soccer player and cross country runner…has been running for eight years…hard worker…dedicated athlete…will provide more leadership as a junior in 2006…expect Zach to have a good season as he plays a different role this year.
The person: Zachary David Powell was born on October 29, 1984 in Fullerton, California to his parents Randy and Catherine Powell…has one older sister …his father is an employee at VU as a Psychologist…friends just call him “Zach”…is studying mathematics at Vanguard…loves to eat steak…favorite color is green…likes the number 21…watches “Family Guy” on television…roots for the Los Angeles Lakers…enjoys spending time in his room…thinks that ignorance is the biggest problem in the world…likes the talent on his VU team…has learned that life has ups and downs…competing in athletics has taught him how to push through pain…is unsure about his future goals.
His thoughts: Zach selected VUSC because it’s a cool place with cool people and he likes the small school feel on campus.
Coach Bryan’s Comments: Zach has been a significant contributor his first two season. He will shift his services from middle distance to sprints and hurdles in 2006. Zach is dedicated, hard working, and is a true student of the sport.
