Biography

The athlete:  Jason begins his first track season at Vanguard…coming off an extremely successful cross country debut last fall with the Lions…set a new PR of 25:17 in the 8K…2006 Cross Country All-GSAC, All-Region, and NAIA National Qualifier…finished 10th in GSAC meet, 13th at Regionals, and 67th at Nationals…transferred to Vanguard from Orange Coast College…has personal records of 9:39 in the Steeple Chase, 15:03 in the 5,000m, 4:05 in the 1500, and 32:18 in the 10,000m…given the Coach’s Award and Most Improved Award…All-Orange Empire League selection…All-State…Team MVP…placed third at the 2005 JC State Meet…attended Huntington Beach High School prior to attending OCC…ran Cross Country and Track and Field...talented runner who will make an immediate impact for the Lions…great athlete…has remarkable dedication, work ethic and attitude…will focus on the steeplechase and longer distances this spring…should be a big contributor in his first season of track with the Lions.

The person:  Jason was born on August 26, 1984 in Huntington Beach, California…parents are Tony Valenzuela and Mary Santana…has four siblings…nickname is “Elbows”...will major in History/Political Science at Vanguard…likes to eat Mexican food…sports hero is Muhamad Ali…loves the movie “Legends Of The Fall” and the TV show “CSI”…loves the color brown and the number four…roots for the New York Yankees…enjoys reading and following baseball…believes that war is the biggest problem in the world…likes that his VU team feels like a family…has learned from life to never give up…competing in sports has taught him to try to become the best person he can become…wants to become a Teacher or a Politician.

His thoughts: I chose Vanguard because I felt it was the place I’m supposed to be.  There are wonderful people here.

Coach Bryan’s comments:   Jason will be a tremendous addition to our team this spring.  His work ethic and drive to excel are second to none.
