The athlete:  Derek is a first-year collegiate student-athlete…2003 graduate of John Jay High School in New York…two sport high school athlete…ran for coach Steve Perks…best 5K time is 17:08…800m best is 1:59…1600m best is 4:40…new to collegiate competition and distance…will add depth to the team…has speed, talent, and a solid summer of base training…good potential…will be one of four challenging for a spot in the top seven VU runners…should have a promising collegiate debut season.

The person:  Derek was born on November 1, 1985 in Tarrytown, New York to his parents Roy and MaryAnne…has two sisters…is undecided on his major at this time…favorite movie is “Dumb And Dumber”…likes to eat pickled pigs feet…sports hero is Tyler Klassen…likes the TV show “The Price is Right”…favorite place to be is New York City…enjoys mountain biking…would like to meet John Cowan…thinks the desolation of the rain forest is the biggest problem in the world…likes the unity on the VU men’s team…has learned that life goes on…has learned from competing in athletics to train hard.
