ARCATA, Calif. -- A Mountain Pacific Sports Federation dual between Vanguard men's wrestling and Cal Poly Humboldt saw the Lions take the dual win 21-18. With no forfeits in the encounter, the Blue and Gold won six bouts and improved to 5-6 in duals on the season and dropped the Lumberjacks to 6-7.
What Happened? The opening class went to CPH, as Dakota Sanders beat
Jovanni Evangelista 11-3. But the Lions got back on track at 133 pounds, as
Zachary Klarcyk bested Josh Neiwert. Each wrestler only had an escape during regulation, but in sudden victory, Klarcyk lunged in and stuck Neiwert to the mat to take a 4-1 decision. The 141-pound encounter went to the Lumberjacks, as Darrell Nanpuya upended
Robert Villegas 18-2. Down 9-3 in the dual,
Hercules Windrath responded with a 3-2 decision over Jayson Victoria.
Vince Partington also won by one, as he took the 157-pound clash 5-4. That tied the dual at 9-9, though Sam Weinberg put the hosts ahead again as he grabbed a 6-2 win over
Caidence Turner at 165 pounds.
Mason Hernandez had a big win for the Blue and Gold at 174 pounds, as he towed Travion Jones around the mat for a 14-0 victory.
Marquize Brown then tallied the biggest win of the night, as his 16-0 technical fall victory over Eric Ruiz put the Lions ahead 18-12.
Sage Adie had the only pin of the night, as he got
Asa Goff at 197 pounds, which meant
David Baxter had it all to do for the Lions. The heavyweights went at it, but Baxter got two takedowns to secure three points and secure a 21-18 dual win for VU.
What was Said? "This was a tough, hard-fought win," said Head Coach
Caleb Flores. "We won two overtime matches that proved to be the difference in the dual. We keep getting better and continuing to grow."
What's Next? The Lions host the MPSF Tournament on Sunday, February 1, with the men's tournament starting at 10:00 a.m.
