SURPRISE, Ariz. – Despite 18 kills from Will Anderson and second-ranked Vanguard hitting .455 for the match, No. 3 OUAZ escaped with a four-set victory in a Golden State Athletic Conference men's volleyball showdown on Saturday at Faith Arena.
Set scores went 27-25, 27-25, 19-25, 25-22 as the Lions lost for just the second time all season, falling to 12-2 overall and 7-2 in the GSAC. The Spirit improved to 19-3 and 7-2 in conference action.
Anderson's 18 kills marked the fourth-most he has had in a match this year. He swung at a .531 (18-1-32) clip, which was his third-best single-match hitting percentage. The opposite also led the Lions with seven digs, but he also had nine of VU's 21 service errors.
Sophomore Andrew Sheveland tallied 12 kills on .409 hitting, adding five digs and three blocks. Senior Glen Linden III also had a solid match with eight kills on 11 errorless swings for a .727 hitting percentage. The middle blocker also collected a team-best four blocks.
Ryan Smith handed out 40 assists to go along with five digs.
VU committed just nine attack errors for the contest, but OUAZ offset that by hitting .345 (58-19-113). The Spirit also won the battle at the service line with nine aces to three.
Addah Nestor led all players with 24 kills on .476 hitting. OUAZ also received 12 kills from Emery Outin and nine more from Caeden Salmen.

Why Is It Important?: The loss gave The Master's the inside track to win the GSAC outright. The Mustangs are 7-1 in conference with matches against Arizona Christian and OUAZ awaiting. The best VU can finish is 8-2.
