COSTA MESA -- The lone home dual for women's wrestling ended in a triumph on Friday night as Vanguard defeated Westcliff 28-10. The Lions won six of the eight weight classes that competed and after a pair of exhibition bouts against club wrestlers from Fresno State, the Lions celebrated seniors
Lily El-Masri,
Ireri Mares,
Mya Crespo, and
Viviana Davalos.
What Happened? Both squads were open at 103 pounds which started the dual at 110 pounds between
Abbeygael Cabuag and Alana Thompson. It did not take long for Cabuag to complete her pin, as the contest lasted just over 90 seconds. Crespo took an open decision at 117 pounds and
Angelina Daoang strode out in her VU debut against Hailee Moreno. Daoang was relentless as she threw down 14 unanswered points to nab a technical fall victory within two minutes.
Devyn McCormick had close to the same result against Ruby Barrett Resse in a 12-2 victory for the Blue and Gold. Alyssa Castillo also took an open victory at 138 pounds, as did
Johanna Forman at 160 pounds. Westcliff got wins by Berlyn Davis over Mares via pin and Kyree Rubio at 207 pounds over
Presley Munoz.
What was Said? "It's always great to get a win at home," said Head Coach
Joe Evano. "Now it's time for the team to have a great finals week and prepare for the next competition."
What's Next? The Blue and Gold will travel to Las Vegas for a multi-team tournament on December 15.
