COSTA MESA -- The home debut for men's wrestling inside the Freed Center for Leadership & Service went in favor of the Air Force Academy Saturday night. The Falcons won every weight class, resulting in a 54-0 win for the visitors. Air Force goes to 1-2 in duals and the Lions drop to 0-1.
What Happened? VU was open at 125 pounds, which moved the event to 133 pounds, where
Robert Villegas featured against Gavin Caprella. Caprella had the only takedown of the first period, but he would surge ahead in the second and third frames to win 16-1.
Hector Hernandez tested himself against Carter Nogle but the Falcon made a pin in the opening period. The Blue and Gold were also open at 149 pounds, which pushed the dual to the 157-pound division.
Caidence Turner made a strong first impression against Ethan "EJ" Beloncik and though he trailed 3-0 after one frame, looked to be the fight. He would hold on through the third period and picked up a few escapes, but Beloncik won 20-3.
Sunni Motas and Andrew Harmon were the duo that sparred at 165 pounds and Motas had a couple of early chances, but he could not flip Harmon for a takedown. Though Motas continued to resist, Harmon would eventually prevail 11-0.
Marquize Brown was pinned at 174 pounds by Jack Ganos and Keagen Kroger was pinned by Gage Musser at 174 pounds, which brought
Isaiah Hernandez out at 197 pounds. He was pitted against Brian Burburija but he would also get pinned in the first frame.
Roman Torres had Antonio Ramos as his opponent and he was able to make a couple of defensive stands, but the Lion could not find a scoring move as Ramos won 13-0.
What's Next? The Lions will send some wrestlers to the CSUB Roadrunner Open tomorrow.
