ATHERTON, Calif. -- Vanguard women's wrestling concluded the dual part of the season in a Cascade Collegiate Conference matchup against Menlo on Friday. The Lions only got one point on the night to fall 43-1, with
Abbeygael Cabuag banking the lone point for the Blue and Gold. VU will go to 1-4 in duals and MC goes to 9-3.
What Happened? Cabuag faced #8 Kayla Mckinley-Johnson in the 101-pound meeting and though she fell behind early, Cabuag would rally to eventually score 10 points, though Mckinley-Johnson would prevail 20-10. Both teams were open at 109 pounds, moving the dual to a clash between
Jade Cabrera against #4 Alejandra Corral at 116 pounds. Cabrera played some stout defense to hold on for awhile, but Corral would make a pin in the first period. VU had to pull out of the 123-pound bout, moving the action to
Elena Ramirez against #3 Louisa Schwab at 130 pounds. Ramirez worked diligently to find an opening, but she could not find a takedown, falling 12-0.
Katelynn Hernandez battled #11 Stephanie Chavez at 136 pounds but try as she might, she could not get on the offensive, and Hernandez would be pinned in the first period.
Nevaeh Chambers took on #5 Desiree Jones at 143 pounds and though her energy made for an early challenge for Jones, the Oak would find a way to make a pin in the opening frame.
Charlize Jewell also threw all she could at #3 Shannon Workinger at 155 pounds, but could not escape the Menlo wrestler, and Workinger made a pin in the first period.
Abena Adu took on #4 Kalila Shrive at 170 pounds and though she made a couple of nice shots, she could not flip Shrive, who eventually pinned the Lion in the first period. VU was open at 191 pounds to conclude the dual.
What's Next? The Lions will return to the Menlo campus for the CCC Championships on Sunday, February 25, with automatic NAIA qualifying spots on the line.
