Two More Indoor Track Records Fall at OCC Indoor Meet

COSTA MESA – Eryn Burke (SO/Yucaipa, CA) and Chase Mars (SO/Chino Hills, CA) broke Vanguard records to headline a list of solid all-around efforts at the OCC Indoor Track and Field Meet Friday at Orange Coast College.

Burke, who last week set school records in the 400 meters and with the 4x400 relay team, added the 600 meter run to her domain. The sophomore won the race in 1:33.57, earning an NAIA "A" standard to qualify for the national meet. Burke's performance erased a 14-year old VU record held by Ashley Rodriguez, who clocked 1:36.04 on Feb. 21, 2009.

Mars took down the VU indoor record in the 200 meters. He sprinted to a winning time of 21.48 seconds, meeting the NAIA "A" qualifying standard as well. Mars also was victorious in the 60 meter dash for the second week in a row, finishing in 6.97 seconds.

Jaelah Butler (SR/La Quinta, CA) won the women's weight throw with a mark of 48 feet, 4 inches, which moved her to No. 2 on the VU all-time top-10 list. Kaylee Jones (SO/Redding, CA) finished second in the event at 40 feet, 11 inches, missing her career-best effort by half an inch.

Butler also posted a first place finish in the shot put, clearing 37-03.75. Jones was third in 33-06.00.

Vanguard also took gold in a pair of relays. The 4x800 team of Kate Baranski (SO/El Cajon, CA), Jessina Morales (SO/Lake Elsinore, CA), India Moors (SO/Oceanside, CA) and Penelopi Leach (JR/Madera, CA) won in 9:44.44. Baranski, Morales and Moors joined Jordyn Burke (SO/Yucaipa, CA) in the 4x1000 distance medley, crossing the line in 12:38.64.

Jordyn Burke and Elizabeth Betten (FR/Yucaipa, CA) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 60 meter dash in 8.01 and 8.11 seconds. Betten came in second in the 200 meters (25.96), with Nohemi Anderson (JR/El Centro, CA) behind her in third at 26.50 seconds.

In the 3000 meters, Karla Sanchez-Ruiz (SO/Los Angeles, CA) earned a third place showing with her time of 10:56.49.

The triple jump featured Faith Hunt (JR/Yorba Linda, CA) finishing fourth with a clearance of 32 feet, 3.5 inches. Olivia Finch (FR/Heppner, OR) came in sixth in 30-08.00.

In addition to Mars, Edgar Sactic (FR/Gardena, CA) highlighted the list of men's performances. Making his Blue and Gold debut, he just missed the school's indoor record in the triple jump by less than an inch, posting a mark of 40-06.50. He finished second in the event.

The 4x800 relay team consisting of Isaiah Feaver (FR/Redding, CA), Anthony Hernandez (FR/Phelan, CA), Justin Ramirez (SO/Alta Loma, CA) and Cooper Anderson (FR/Murrieta, CA) placed second overall in 8:34.31.

Evan Hernandez (SO/Menifee, CA) took the track in the 3000 meters, and clocked 8:56.84 for fourth place.

Anderson returned for the 1-mile run and earned third place with his time of 4:47.41.

In the shot put, Blake Rodriguez (SR/Yucaipa, CA) finished sixth with a heave of 37 feet, 9.25 inches.
