Men's Wrestling Takes Care of ACU on the Road

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Vanguard men's wrestling squared off against Arizona Christian for the second meeting on the mat this season Friday night.  It had been an easy stroll for the Lions at home, winning 42-4, but ACU was stronger at home.  VU built a lead and survived the charge of the Firestorm to win 32-21.

What Happened? Wins came early and often, as Dominic De'Altonaga (SO/Poway, CA) at 125-pounds, Julian Leon (FR/Fontana, CA) at 133-pounds, Steven Kroesen (JR/Laguna Hills, CA) at 141-pounds, and Bryant Avila (FR/Rialto, CA) at 149-pounds all came out victorious to shove the Blue and Gold ahead 21-0.  The Firestorm then marched back with 12 points, as Ruben Rodriguez (FR/Chula Vista, CA) and Luke Lussier (JR/Victorville, CA) were both upended.  Things got back on track though as Gerardo Hernandez (SR/Mission Viejo, CA) whipped up a technical fall victory at 174 pounds.  Ahead 26-18, Isaiah Hernandez (SO/Selma, CA) fell in the 197-pound scrap to make the score 26-21.  However, Arizona Christian was open at the heavyweight position, giving the Lions the 32-21 victory.

Why is it Important?  The Blue and Gold are 4-2 now in duals on the season and the squad is now 4-1 all-time against the Firestorm.

What was Said?  "Our guys wrestled well," said Head Coach Caleb Flores.  "I saw a lot of progress from some of our guys, but we have a quick turnaround and have to refocus for our next two duals."

What's Next? The Lions will take on Southern Oregon and Embry-Riddle out in Prescott, Arizona, at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.
