SAN DIMAS Calif. - Vanguard Wrestling headed to Life Pacific College to take on Arizona Christian University after a road trip to the Grand Canyon State. The Blue and Gold had one of their best outings of the season as they narrowly lost 23-27, with 12 of the Firestorm points coming from forfeit victories. They will look to ride the momentum from this match into their next home meet against the 8th-ranked Menlo Oaks on Friday, December 6th.
The Firestorm had to forfeit in the 141-pound division while Vanguard had to forfeit in the 165 and 184-pound division due to injury. Elias Gonzales kicked things off for Arizona Christian University as he picked up an 8-3 decision victory over Manuel Jaramillo. The Lions bounced back in a big way as Sunny Luna (FR/Victorville, CA) earned an 18-3 technical fall victory to put five points on the board for the Lions. Gabriel Cortez (FR/Covina, CA) was able to keep the momentum going with a narrow 4-3 decision victory over Anthony Cruz.
Cole Drescher was able to pin Brian Isaias (FR/Villa Park, CA) to put six points on the board for the Firestorm and after 12 more points were added for the matches that were forfeit, ACU was in the lead 21-14. Armon Fayyazi (JR/Irvine, CA) cut the deficit to four with a 3-1 decision victory over Andres Aguilera. Joshua Walker was able to pin Andrew Shin (FR/Glendora, CA) in the second to last match of the afternoon, but Joshua Sapien (JR/Hacienda Heights, CA) was able to pin Caleb Baker to end things on a high note for the Blue and Gold.
Overall, Arizona Christian won one match by decision, two by fall and two by forfeit. Vanguard won two decisions, one match by fall, one by forfeit, and one by technical fall.
