Freed Center For Leadership & Service
The Freed Center for Leadership & Service is home to all indoor sports for Vanguard Athletics and features the main Bill & Shirley Reynolds court, two side courts, two retractable bleachers, three video boards, and a broadcast room. In addition to the main gym and locker rooms, the building houses the entire VU Athletic Department, the athletic's strength and conditioning gym, the Sports Medicine room, the school's kinesiology department, and classrooms across its upper two floors.
The Freed Center was completed in 2024 and was cleared for hosting duties just in time for the first Pacific West Conference women's volleyball game in school history on September 20. Nearly 1,000 people arrived to watch that contest, with University President Dr. Michael J. Beals giving the official opening speech and the student section doing a great whiteout to cheer on the team. Since then, the building has hosted the MPSF Wrestling Conference Tournament and a inter-squad scrimmage for USA Men's Volleyball during the summer of 2025 that sold out the building, the largest crowd so far to come to the venue. In 2026, the first PacWest Championship arrives with the hosting of the Women's Volleyball Tournament, with basketball slated to come over the following years.
The bleachers can hold a capacity crowd of 1,100 people, while the balcony deck offers more space and a reminder of the second floor of the old gym, "The Pit", which brought fans right on top of the action. A snack bar in the atrium along with TV screens dedicated to past national champions and VU Athletic Hall of Fame members round out the game-day experience at the Freed Center.
When set to event mode, the building can seat more people on the floor, and a stage can be erected at the east end that get pair with speakers above. This allows the Freed Center to host school events, chapels, and allow for public speaking engagements and churches to rent out the space.
